A Lake Michigan engagement session is always a good reminder that you don’t need dramatic mountains or a faraway destination to create beautiful photographs. Sometimes all you need is a shoreline, a little sunshine, and a couple who are willing to embrace the moment. These two brought along one very important member of the family: their dog.
As much as I love photographing couples, I have a soft spot for dogs joining engagement sessions. They always bring an extra layer of personality to the photos. Whether they’re running across the beach, demanding attention, or simply staying close to their favorite people, they have a way of making the experience feel even more authentic.
From the start, this session felt relaxed and effortless. We spent the evening walking along the shoreline, letting their dog explore, and chasing the last bit of light across the water. There wasn’t a strict plan. Instead, we simply followed whatever felt natural. One of my favorite things about photographing engagement sessions near Lake Michigan is how much variety the landscape offers. Depending on the weather and time of day, the lake can feel calm and peaceful or dramatic and wild. On this particular evening, the water invited us in.
A Lake Michigan engagement session offers plenty of opportunities for those moments. The beaches create space to slow down, move freely, and focus on each other without distractions. Whether you’re bringing your dog along, planning to get your feet wet, or simply looking for a location that feels relaxed and natural, the shoreline provides the perfect setting. By the end of the evening, everyone was a little sandy, a little wet, and completely happy. Exactly how an engagement session should be.
