An Elk Flats Oregon elopement sounds romantic on paper. Standing on dramatic cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean while the wind blows through your hair feels like something out of a movie. However, after visiting Elk Flats during the rainy season, I can confidently say that the trail itself is not for the faint of heart.

This styled elopement took place during The Gathering in February 2026. Like much of the Oregon Coast in winter, the weather had other plans for us. Rain fell throughout the day, turning an already challenging trail into a muddy obstacle course.

The hike to Elk Flats is steep even in ideal conditions. Add rain, slick roots, and thick mud, and every step requires your full attention. As the person responsible for a group of photographers carrying expensive camera gear along a narrow trail with significant drop-offs, I spent most of the hike trying not to imagine worst-case scenarios. Every time someone slipped slightly, my heart stopped. Thankfully, everyone made it safely to the viewpoint.

The rain softened the landscape and created a mood that felt perfectly suited for an intimate elopement. The conditions may have been difficult, but they also gave us the kind of atmosphere photographers dream about. For this styled elopement, Barrett wore a wedding dress from Anthropologie that moved beautifully in the coastal wind. Meanwhile, Elle wore a suit from Express (actually a suit I bought to photograph weddings in pre pregnancy), creating a look that felt approachable, timeless, and perfect for an adventure-inspired celebration.

One of the things I love most about the Oregon Coast is that it never feels overly polished. Instead, it feels wild. The weather changes quickly. The trails demand respect. The landscape reminds you how small you are. Yet that unpredictability is exactly what makes photographs from places like Elk Flats so memorable.

Would I recommend this location? Absolutely. Would I recommend attempting the trail in heavy rain without proper footwear and a healthy respect for steep cliffs? Absolutely not. Still, this Elk Flats Oregon elopement became one of my favorite shoots from The Gathering. The hike was stressful. The trail was intimidating. Yet the view waiting at the end made every muddy step worth it.
