There is something about an Oregon Coastal Elopement that feels different from anywhere else. The coastline is wild, the weather is unpredictable, and the landscape feels like it belongs in a storybook. Every time I return to the Oregon coast, I’m reminded why it remains one of my favorite places to photograph.
This editorial-inspired elopement was photographed in Gearhart, Oregon during The Gathering in February. Gearhart is a quiet coastal town with long stretches of beach, dramatic skies, and a slower pace than some of the more well-known destinations along the coast. Just down the road sits Cannon Beach, one of Oregon’s most recognizable locations, known for Haystack Rock and its iconic shoreline views.
While Cannon Beach often gets most of the attention, there is something incredibly special about the surrounding coastal communities. They offer the same rugged beauty while allowing space to slow down and appreciate the landscape.
One of the highlights of this shoot was working with Orin Steele as our “bride”. Orin recently released her debut novel, By Blood, Shadow, and Fire. The entire landscape felt cinematic and atmospheric, like a setting pulled directly from the pages of her fantasy novel.
During The Gathering, one of my goals is always to create experiences that encourage photographers to slow down and focus on storytelling. Beautiful locations certainly help, but the strongest photographs happen when intention, emotion, and environment all work together. The Oregon coast provides the perfect backdrop for that kind of work.
An Oregon Coastal Elopement is not about perfect weather or predictable conditions. In many ways, it’s about embracing the opposite. The wind, the clouds, and the ever-changing landscape become part of the story. Rather than working against the environment, you learn to work with it. That spirit was present throughout this entire session.
From the quiet beaches of Gearhart to the dramatic coastline stretching toward Cannon Beach, every part of the day felt immersive and inspiring. It served as a reminder of why so many couples are drawn to the Oregon coast for their wedding day. The scenery is undeniably beautiful, but more importantly, it creates space for a wedding experience that feels intentional, adventurous, and deeply personal.
This Oregon Coastal Elopement was one of my favorite moments from February’s Gathering, and it perfectly captured the kind of storytelling that continues to bring me back to the Pacific Northwest year after year.
